| One of the key findings from our analyses reported in the Clarivate and Universiti Malaya joint report ‘The influence of strategic programmes on Universiti Malaya’s research and innovation footprint,’ is the emergence of a new culture of research excellence from the High Impact Research(HIR) program, and this positive phenomenon continues well after the post-HIR period. Professor Dr. Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Universiti Malaya
Professor Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of University of Malaya in August 2015. Prior to this, Professor Noorsaadah served as the Director for the UM Institute of Research Management and Monitoring (IPPP), a position she held since January 2009. Prof Noorsaadah’s areas of research interest are in organic synthesis and reaction methodology, drug design and also in management of organic pollutants in the environment. She is still an active researcher, heading her own research group in drug design and development research. In 2016, she was made a fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences and accorded the Top Research Scientist Award by the Academy.
Professor Dr. Saad Mekhilef
Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Malaya
Professor Dr. Saad Mekhilef is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and a Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is an Associate Editor of various top journals such as IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and the Journal of Power Electronics. He is a Professor at the Department of Electrical, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya, since June 1999. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and the Director of Power Electronics and Renewable Energy Research Laboratory (PEARL). He authored and co-authored more than 400 publications in academic journals and proceedings and five books with more than 24,000 citations. He is frequently invited as honorary keynote lectures at international conferences, congress, meetings, and symposiums.
Professor Dr. Mekhilef has been listed by Thomson Reuters (Clarivate Analytics) as one of the Highly Cited (Hi.Ci) engineering researchers in the world in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He is actively involved in industrial consultancy for major corporations in the Power Electronics and Renewable Energy projects. His research interests include Power Conversion Techniques, Control of Power Converters, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), Renewable Energy, and Energy Efficiency.

Associate Professor Chan is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her research has been focusing on enterovirus A71, an emerging virus that causes severe neurological disease and hand, foot and mouth disease. Specifically, she is developing vaccines, antivirals and education tools for this highly preventable disease common in children.
She leads a virology laboratory with research interests in epidemiology and pathogenesis of emerging viruses such as enterovirus A71, chikungunya, and respiratory viruses. With more than 20 years of research experience, she has over 90 publications, and has been involved in many research programs and grants at both national and international levels. She currently serves as the Associate editor for BMC Infectious Diseases and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
She has received the ASEAN-US Science Prize for women 2020, L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Malaysia Fellowship, 2014, L’Oréal-UNESCO International Rising Talent, 2015, Young Women Leaders award Category Science and Technology, National Council of Women’s Organizations Malaysia 2015 and Asian Women Entrepreneurs leadership award, Science and Environment. 2019. These awards have given her the opportunity to promote women in science in Malaysia.
