Indigenous knowledge is a vital part of the cultural heritage and identity of many communities around the world. However, it is often overlooked or marginalized in academic libraries. Join us for this webinar session where we will explore the concept of indigenising the curriculum and how it can benefit both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
Yanti Ropeyarn, Senior Specialist, Indigenous Initiatives at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia and Ashley Edwards, Indigenous Initiatives and Instruction Librarian, Simon Fraser University, Canada will share some practical strategies and examples of how to embed Indigenous knowledge into library collections, such as selecting and acquiring relevant materials, and engaging with Indigenous communities and stakeholders. We will also hear from Wiley Barnes, Director at Chickasaw Press about ways librarians can ensure that Indigenous voices are represented and respected in their collections.
Objectives:
• Understanding the importance of Indigenisation: Gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and the need for a more inclusive and diverse representation within academic resources.
• Challenges and opportunities: Explore the challenges faced by librarians in identifying, selecting and integrating Indigenous content into collections to align with existing curricula needs.
• Promoting cultural sensitivity: How to approach indigenising the curriculum with cultural sensitivity and ensure respectful representation and interpretation of Indigenous materials in electronic collections.
This webinar is aimed at academic librarians who are interested in learning more about indigenising collections and how to apply it in their own contexts. The session will be interactive and participatory, with opportunities for questions and discussion.
