Breaking barriers, building bridges: Embracing DEI in libraries through collection development

This panel session focuses on the significance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in libraries, with a specific emphasis on how library collections support the university’s DEI mission. Collection publishing and development approaches for DEI will be covered as well as insights on opportunities libraries have to re-orient and reposition their existing collections to find and highlight DEI content. Hear from Matthew Roberts, Assistant Professor and Literatures and Languages Librarian, from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Lisa Johnston, Director of Library Services, from Eckerd College.

We’ll explore the journey of collections publishing, including the factors that influence selection—from curation approaches to current trends in scholarship. The session will examine the critical connection between DEI and teaching and learning, emphasizing the benefits of offering diverse and inclusive collections for educational experiences.

  • When: Saturday, June 24 from 10 - 10:45 a.m. CDT
  • Where: Hyatt Regency McCormick, Regency Ballroom D&E (refreshments will be provided)

Efficiency Unleashed: Save time and maximize your collection budget

Collection development for today’s academic librarians can be a time-consuming process, with myriad options to navigate for content, formats and acquisition models. The good news: your library doesn’t need to handle this process alone.

Join this session to hear how libraries like yours are benefitting from collection development and workflow services offered by ProQuest, Part of Clarivate.

Learn about Title Matching Fast (TMF), an easy-to-read report compiled from your library’s holdings to inform e-collection development. TMF offers practical applications including the ability to identify newer editions of titles held in print or electronic format, and to identify gaps in your collections across subject areas. It’s just one of the services available to help your library save time, maximize your budget and build strong collections. We’ll also explore:

Collection-building services including custom title lists, specialized collections, opening day collections, and targeted collection-gap filling
Profile creation and maintenance of books programs, including DDA, EBA, Approvals, Title Alerts, and more
Consultations to establish best practice workflows that save time and streamline your day-to-day processes
Bring your questions for Q&A or pose them to ProQuest team members who will be available following the session to address your institution’s needs.

Speakers: Aimée Leverette-Green and Nathaniel Gray

  • When: Saturday, June 24 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. CDT
  • Where: Hyatt Regency McCormick, Regency Ballroom D&E

Designing a user experience to support student success

Today’s students have been born into a world of near universal use of digital technology, and their generational traits present both challenges and opportunities to educators and librarians eager to help them reach their academic and professional goals. While these students are digitally-savvy, they are often overwhelmed with information and challenged to know “where to start” or “what to do next” when navigating library resources.

Thoughtful design that goes beyond the search box and meets students where they are in their workflow can offer the scaffolding they need for successful research and assignments.

Join us as we discuss how UX design in library resources can be integral to student success. In this session we’ll explore:

  • Common roadblocks (and solutions) students encounter as part of their research and assignment tasks
  • How student generational traits influence opportunities in user experience design
  • How specialized design for academic disciplines can better serve student learning and use cases in a specific field

  • When: Sunday, June 25 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. CDT
  • Where: Hyatt Regency McCormick, Regency Ballroom D&E

Polaris + Vega LX

Pairing the Polaris ILS with the Vega Library Experience (LX) suite provides libraries with a holistic view of their operations. While Polaris manages your collection, the modules within Vega LX are designed to handle your community relationships and patron interactions. Right now, libraries often take a patchwork approach to engaging with patrons through different products for managing emails, discovery, and event registration — often with frustrating integrations and no oversight into how those tools overlap or work together. Polaris + Vega LX eliminates those frustrations while keeping patron data in one, secure ecosystem.
