Eugene Garfield Centenary Celebration:
Past, Present and Future of Scientometrics

Online event I 19 November 2025

Eugene Garfield’s Legacy and the Future of Scientometrics

Online event I 19 November (2pm - 4pm UK time zone)
This year we are celebrating the Centennial of Dr Eugene Garfield, the visionary who founded the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and pioneered citation indexing. His groundbreaking innovations laid the foundation for modern scientometrics and Web of Science. This event revisits the intellectual roots and evolving horizons of scientometrics.

The session traces the field’s transformation from the early days of information retrieval to the contemporary challenges of research evaluation, responsible metrics, and open science.
Discussions will address the enduring tensions between peer review and quantitative assessment, examine the methodological pluralism of modern scientometrics, and envision a future of inclusive and ethically aware bibliometric practices.

With an eye to the future, we ask how scientometrics can evolve to better capture the complexity of knowledge and contribute to a more connected, inclusive research ecosystem.
