STI 2023 Conference, Stadsgehoorzaal, Aalmarktzaal
September 28th, 2023
from 16:00 to 17:30 hrs
In this memorial lecture honoring Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ founder Eugene Garfield, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Henry Small’s seminal work, “Co-citation in the scientific literature: A new measure of the relationship between two documents”. Dr. Small will reflect on the history of co-citation analysis and its early development, under the influence of Garfield, Thomas Kuhn, and Derek de Solla Price.

Fifty years on, co-citation continues to be relevant for studying specialized fields. Exciting prospects lie ahead with the emergence of novel techniques in computational linguistics and AI, potentially enabling us to delve deeper into the interplay of scientific ideas.

In commemorating the legacy of Eugene Garfield, this inaugural memorial lecture is a testament to his lasting impact on the field of citation indexing and analysis, acknowledging the transformative power of his ideas and inspiring future explorations at the frontiers of scientific discovery.

ISI will also host a cocktail reception following the lecture to celebrate the life and work of Eugene Garfield and the 50th anniversary of Dr. Small’s paper.
